Service Women’s Action Network (SWAN) is a 501c3 non-profit organization that supports, connects and advocates for service women; past, present and future. SWAN is incorporated in New York with offices located in Washington, DC.

Position Description: The CEO of Service Women’s Action Network (SWAN) is responsible for the overall management and development of the organization. The CEO leads the organization overseeing day-to-day activities ensuring SWAN accomplishes its mission.  In conjunction with the Board of Directors, she sets, prioritizes, implements, and evaluates policies, goals and objectives in support of the mission.  In addition, she hires, supervises and terminates the staff.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

Strategic Leadership

  • Oversee implementation of SWAN’s Strategic Plan to include ensuring adequate human and financial resources are available to meet goals and objectives of the plan.
  • Oversee development, prioritization, implementation and evaluation of annual work plans for each of SWAN’s goals and objectives.
  • Establish annual policy priorities.
  • Attend relevant coalition meetings of partner organizations (i.e., The Military Women’s Coalition (MWC) meetings) and high-level federal agency, congressional, White House or similar meetings.
  • Establish annual communications goals; serve as the spokesperson for SWAN; respond to requests for media input in a timely manner; write articles for publication.
  • Oversee and ensure appropriate staffing of projects supporting SWAN’s strategic goals (e.g., amici briefs, legal developments impacting women in the military, etc.).
  • Establish and cultivate synergistic relationships with partner organizations furthering our shared goals.
  • Assist in the identification and recruitment of her successor.


Operations and Human Resources Management

  • Provide oversight of day-to-day operations.
  • Hire and terminate staff.
  • Supervise, evaluate, consult and otherwise lead the staff.
  • Work closely with staff to improve organizational efficiency and develop and document standard operating procedures within each department, to include attending weekly staff meetings.
  • Oversee contracts with consultants and vendors.
  • Solicit pro bono resources where needed and maintain relationships with pro bono vendors (law firms, law school, partner organizations, etc).
  • Oversee organizational risk management efforts (insurance coverage, minimizing legal liability with assistance of pro bono corporate counsel, etc).


Fiscal Management

  • Serve as the main point of contact for SWAN’s financial management services (bookkeeper, accounting firm, audit firm, etc).
  • Create and execute annual budget plan in coordination with the board of directors.
  • Provide financial oversight; oversee and review financial reports and provide feedback to the board of directors.
  • Oversee expenditures in accordance with board-approved annual operating budget.


Fund Development

  • Oversee all fundraising efforts.
  • Initiate and actively engage in donor and grantor cultivation activities.


Board Relationships

  • Build and maintain an effective working relationship with the board.
  • Work with the board co-chairs to maximize board effectiveness.
  • Work with the board treasurer to ensure proper financial oversight by board.
  • Attend all board meetings.
  • Regularly report to the board on all organizational activities and initiatives.
  • Give at least three months’ notice of departure and assist with identification and recruitment of her successor, unless mutually agreed upon by the CEO and board.



  • Defense related experience.
  • Skilled manager of people with nonprofit experience.
  • Successful track record in fundraising.
  • Excellent communicator able to motivate and inspire staff, board members, donors, and others to take action.
  • Veteran status is a preferred.


Compensation: $50,000 with opportunity for rapid increases within the first year. No benefits. Start date 1 January 2020.
